KARACHI: The police in Karachi have suspended the Gulshan-e-Iqbal Station House Officer (SHO) for poor performance after a young man was killed in a street crime incident on Saturday.

The incident occurred in Gulshan-e-Iqbal Block 7 when 27-year-old mechanical engineer Itteqa Mooen Khan was approached by armed robbers near his home while returning from a nearby bakery. The robbers shot and killed him, fleeing with his motorcycle, mobile phone, and wallet.

A case has been registered at the Gulshan-e-Iqbal Police Station under robbery and murder charges, based on a complaint from the victim's brother. The police also recovered a 9mm pistol shell from the crime scene, which has been sent for forensic analysis.

The spokesperson for the East Police stated that a departmental inquiry has been ordered into the incident. According to The News, police confirmed that the shooting occurred during a robbery attempt, with two suspects on a motorcycle responsible for the attack. The suspects managed to escape.

Police are trying to obtain CCTV footage to help identify the suspects. At the time of this report, no one had been arrested.

This incident highlights the rising street crime in Karachi, the country's financial hub, where 71 people have lost their lives to criminals in 2024 so far. Despite transferring about 6,000 criminals to Karachi Central Jail in the first five months of the year, the law and order situation continues to worsen, with citizens frequently being robbed and killed.

Last month, President Asif Ali Zardari, during a special meeting on Sindh's law and order situation, directed Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah to launch a large-scale operation against street criminals in Karachi. The president also urged authorities to expedite the Karachi Safe City project to combat street crime and improve safety in the city.
