In a decisive move to counter the menace of professional begging, the Punjab government has announced the establishment of special barracks across the province’s jails specifically for imprisoning beggar mafia chiefs.
Following the instructions of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the Punjab Home Department revealed plans for designated barracks for beggar mafia leaders, marking a significant step in the province's crackdown on organized begging.
According to a spokesperson on Sunday, each barrack in the initial phase will accommodate between 100 to 200 individuals. The number of these specialized barracks will be expanded as needed, with a focus on larger cities where the problem is more widespread.

In addition to these logistical changes, the Punjab Home Department is drafting legislation to impose stricter penalties on leaders of the beggar mafia.The new law aims to stop people who kidnap and exploit children for begging. It will enforce strict and heavy punishments for those found guilty.
This legislative amendment aims to ensure that individuals who exploit innocent children and women for professional begging face significant legal consequences.
The spokesperson emphasized the government's commitment to eradicating the beggar mafia from the province. In line with this commitment, a province-wide crackdown on the beggar mafia is set to commence shortly, targeting those who oppress and exploit vulnerable populations.
