In Lahore, Senior Punjab Ministers Marriyum Aurangzeb announced on Sunday that the production, distribution, and trade of plastic will be banned across the province starting June 5. She mentioned that plastic is a source of cancer and other deadly diseases.

Marriyum stated that the use of plastic is increasing environmental pollution. Therefore, a crackdown on factories making these illegal products will begin on June 5.

The Punjab government is taking these measures based on Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s directive to start a "No to Plastic" campaign. Under this campaign, giving food in plastic bags at hotels and other eateries will be strictly prohibited.

The government has already made arrangements to strictly enforce the plastic ban strategy.

Ahead of Earth Day 2024, on April 19, the Punjab government decided to launch environment-friendly initiatives. As part of this initiative, the Chief Minister supported a complete ban on plastic bag usage starting June 5.

In a review meeting in April, Marriyum discussed the campaign's goal to raise public awareness about the serious health risks linked to plastic pollution. She emphasized the need to ban the production, distribution, and use of polythene bags due to their harmful environmental impact and their role in causing respiratory diseases and other life-threatening conditions.
