Poet Ahmed Farhad Arrested by AJK Police, AGP Informs IHC

On Wednesday, Attorney General for Pakistan Mansoor Usman Awan informed the Islamabad High Court (IHC) about the whereabouts of missing Kashmiri poet Ahmed Farhad, stating that he has been arrested and is currently under police custody in Azad Jammu Kashmir This revelation came during the hearing of a petition seeking the recovery of the poet.


Farhad's wife, Urooj Zainab, moved the IHC on May 15, requesting the court to locate, investigate, and prosecute those responsible for her husband's disappearance. The case is being presided over by Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani, with human rights lawyer Iman Mazari representing Zainab.


During the hearing, a report from the DhirKot Kashmir police station was presented. Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, speaking to journalists outside the IHC, confirmed that the police are actively investigating the case.

"Ahmad Farhad is in Azad Kashmir. I assisted on constitutional matters as a judicial assistant," Tarar explained, justifying his presence in court.


Farhad, known for his defiant prose, was reportedly abducted from his home on May 14. During the May 21 hearing, AGP Awan had assured the court of his commitment to recovering the poet, following the IHC's orders.


"We will do whatever it takes. "We will rescue and recover Farhad," 


AGP Awan promised, to address the IHC judge and take responsibility for the situation.


Justice Kayani emphasized the importance of ensuring that no one is unlawfully detained in Islamabad. "If a person does not get recovered, it will be a failure of the state," he remarked.


AGP Awan requested additional time to ensure Farhad's recovery, while the petitioner's lawyer urged the AGP to share the progress made over the past six days.


"If the agencies don't have him [Farhad], then he can be traced at least," she argued, highlighting the need for continued efforts in locating the missing poet.
