KARACHI: Despite the ongoing heatwave conditions across many cities, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecast on Thursday that various regions will experience substantial monsoon rains from June to August.

While this forecast may provide some relief from the scorching temperatures, it also raises concerns about potential flash floods due to excessive rainfall.

According to the PMD's outlook for the expected monsoon rains, there is a likelihood of normal to above-normal precipitation in most areas this year. Central and northern Punjab are expected to receive particularly heavy downpours. Additionally, southern Sindh is likely to experience torrential rains, and Balochistan is also at risk of significant rainfall.

According to the PMD, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan are expected to get normal rainfall this year.

The department anticipates heavier rainfall during the first phase of the monsoon compared to the second phase.

The PMD said that during the first part of the monsoon, there might be more intense rainfall compared to the second part.

On May 27, the PMD had predicted that Punjab and the upper regions of the country would receive rain during the ongoing week, which could alleviate the intense heat affecting almost the entire country.

As the plains remain under severe hot weather with temperatures soaring above 40°C in several cities, the PMD noted the possibility of isolated rain spells in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and several cities in Punjab.

"The Meteorological Office said that a weak weather system from the west might impact northern areas of the country on the evening or night of May 28," the weather forecast mentioned.

According to the Met Office, severe heatwave conditions are expected to subside in the upper regions if it rains. However, the heat intensity will persist in the central and southern parts of the country, namely Punjab and Sindh, with day temperatures likely to remain 3°C to 4°C above normal, it said.
