ISLAMABAD: A blaze that ignited in the Margalla Hills near Islamabad a day ago spurred a massive firefighting operation in the federal capital on Tuesday.

Numerous firefighting teams have launched efforts to contain and extinguish the fire engulfing the Margalla range, successfully quelling the flames at Trail 3, as reported by the Capital Development Authority (CDA).

According to the CDA spokesperson, the fire originated at Trail 3 in the Saidpur range before spreading towards Trail 5 in the Noorpur range. Over 65 firefighters are currently engaged in the operation, with ongoing efforts to suppress the fire at Trail 5.

Supervision of the extinguishing operation is being carried out by the DG Environment, with additional teams dispatched to the affected trails. Firefighters are facing challenges due to high temperatures and windy conditions hindering their efforts.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has taken cognizance of the fire on Margalla Hills, directing prompt mobilization of relevant authorities to commence firefighting operations and ensure the safety of human lives.

Six aviation squadrons and helicopters from the Pakistan Army are also participating in the firefighting efforts, as reported by Radio Pakistan.

While the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has cautioned the public to exercise vigilance, noting that both natural phenomena and human activities can potentially trigger forest fires.

Forest fires are a recurrent phenomenon during the summer season, often exacerbated by rising temperatures.
